MGM Group has announced its intention to expand its online gambling platform globally

Bayer CFO Jonathan Halkyard said at BofA Securities’ 2021 Gaming & Hospitality Conference that the company will continue to expand its online gambling business, BetMGM, while aggressively moving towards an asset-light model with a primary focus on gaming operations rather than ownership.

Due to the lack of prospects for a new large-scale brick-and-mortar resort, and MGM’s reluctance to invest such a large resource outside of Macau and Japan, MGM may look elsewhere to expand. In addition to holding a majority stake in MGM China Holdings Limited, which now operates MGM MACAU and MGM COTAI, MGM also leads a group targeting the establishment of an IR (Integrated Resort) in Osaka, Japan.

“When I think about what this company needs to become, the answer is definitely the most recognizable brand in the gaming industry, the most trusted brand.” Halkyard said.

“Casual, high-end, and want to set up as many distribution points as possible, with the highest accessibility in this country.

“And then within the regulatory framework, the online product is made available internationally.

“In reality, there won’t be a large number of jurisdictions where the opportunity to set up an integrated resort will come up, and the capital outlay may be quite extreme, but in the locations where we’re located – Macau and Japan – we expect to be a major force there. So, we want to be the best brand, the [most] trusted brand everywhere, and the number one in the gambling industry. ”

In his presentation, Halkyard highlighted the long-term potential of BetMGM, the company’s joint venture with Entain PLC.

Online consumers around the world will become M life Rewards members, earning points and rewards for playing at BetMGM, the result of the omnichannel approach advocated by the company. Halkyard added that the company will continue to streamline its commercial strategy for the foreseeable future.

“Bayer has been distracted by its non-gaming investments in the past, and over the past six months, Bill (by name Hornbuckle, CEO) and I, along with some of the management team, we’ve been unwinding and closing some of those investments,” he said. ”

“These businesses are small, but they take up financial and managerial resources, so we’re in the process of eliminating them.

“We’ve gone through the CityCenter [sale], MGP (MGM Growth Properties, LLC) deals, so we’ve reduced the financial engineering, which is more streamlined and established, and we’re an operating company.”
