By banning the use of credit cards, the (Prohibition of the Use of Credit Cards) Act 2021 aims to amend the Betting Act 1931 to promote responsible betting. Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on addiction, rehabilitation and welfare, Thomas Gould, introduced the bill.
Under the original legislation, individuals applying for a license had to agree not to accept bets placed using a credit card, and the new bill will make this requirement mandatory. In addition, the bill would also prohibit the use of e-wallets unless the payment institution can demonstrate safeguards against the use of credit cards.
After three months, existing licensees will be subject to the new credit card restrictions. Violators can be punished with up to two years in prison.
“I’m really proud to introduce this legislation that would ban the use of credit cards for online and in-store betting.” Gould said.
“Protecting vulnerable populations must be a top priority for gambling regulation. While the government has yet to publish a gambling control bill, Sinn Féin is committed to coming up with credible protections to help protect vulnerable populations. ”
In August, it was announced that betting companies in Ireland would ban the use of credit cards for gambling, as well as whistle-to-whistle advertisements that were advertised before adult advertising breaks.
“We need to make sure that people who are trapped by addiction don’t gamble with money they don’t have and can’t afford,” Gould added.
“I call on all political parties and independents to support this legislation and ensure that we see real protections for the most vulnerable in our society.”
