The Betting (Credit Card Ban) Act 2021 aims to revise the Betting Act 1931 with the aim of encouraging responsible gambling. It was presented by Thomas Gould, Sinn Fin’s spokesman for addiction, rehabilitation and wellbeing.
Under the original legislation, individuals wishing to obtain a license must agree not to accept bets made using a credit card, and the new law will make this requirement mandatory. It will also be prohibited to use e-wallets unless the payment provider proves that there are safeguards in place to prevent the use of credit cards.
After three months, people with existing permits will be subject to new credit card restrictions. Violations can result in a fine of up to two years in prison.
“I’m really proud to have enacted this law, which will ban credit cards when placing bets online and in-store,” Gould said.
“Protecting vulnerable people must be at the forefront of gambling regulation. Although the government has not yet published a gambling control bill, Sinn Fin is committed to providing robust protection measures that will help protect vulnerable people.”
In August, it was announced that Irish bookmakers would ban the use of credit cards for gambling, as well as anticipatory advertising.
“We need to make sure that those who are addicted don’t gamble with money they don’t have,” Gould added.
“I call on all parties and independents to support this law and ensure that we see real protections for the most vulnerable in our society.”
