Camille from SiGMA sat down with one of Malta’s gaming tech leaders, Wesley Ellul, a well-known face at SiGMA events, to discuss a new era in gaming and technology.

Wesley Ellul is a serial entrepreneur who has worked in a wide variety of industries. He was one of the first digital entrepreneurs working in the tech sector in Malta. Since 2005, Ellul has opened a number of companies, including the likes of Untangled Media, Keepmeposted, and TicketLine. Currently, it has 13 operating enterprises.

His latest venture . Quizando is a brand that allows players to play classic quizzes anywhere, anytime. Despite working in the gaming industry, he focuses on games of skill and later became actively involved in the blockchain industry.

“I am a person who sees opportunities and sees how we can develop them and improve industries for everyone.”

Speaking about his venture, Quizando, Wesley says his idea is that it’s knowledge-based. He describes the idea that Quizando is a game of skill as a happy moment for him. “The fact that players do it because they believe they can win makes the site less gambling,” Ellul explains.

Quizando has games of different levels, allowing people to compete at different levels. When the initial version was launched in late 2016 and early 2017, it worked so well for a period of three to six months that its servers crashed, making it clear to everyone involved in the project that they were on the right track.

“Now, Quizando has evolved into a social gaming platform where games are skill-based and communities interact with each other.”

It’s evolved in different ways, now you’re not just playing against a diverse group of people, but now you’re part of the community, playing against the community and seeing who’s the best at what you’re doing.”

Quizando has evolved dramatically. The first major evolution occurred between 2018 and 2019, when the team was building a scalable platform. It is a platform that can accommodate about a hundred thousand players playing the same game at the same time. Apart from this, the brand has also started looking for those who have some kind of audience to expand further.

YouTubers, celebrities, and charities discovered Quizando’s reverse version of Twitch, where instead of everyone watching someone play the game and then chatting about it, the exact opposite began to come to fruition.

content creators host the game, and players actively play it, rather than passively watching and commenting on it.

He says it really changes the community dynamic, bringing players closer together and engaging them a lot more in the long run.

When asked if people have easily adapted to this new game model, Ellul replies that everyone who has tried it has loved it so far, so they have worked on it with various communities. The largest community that Quizando worked with was in India.

Working with the World Wildlife Fund and thousands of schools across India, their largest game consisted of 50,000 players. 50,000 children across India play 2 million games over the next seven days after the gaming event.

“Therefore, people adapt very quickly. They get into the whole concept because the idea is that when you play and you see that you can do something, it pushes you to do a little better every time. We mix it with education and even just social events to make it very easy for people to adapt.” The figures and achievements so far have been quite satisfactory, he claims.

Implementation of technologies in the gaming industry

Being in the tech industry since early 2000, the interviewee witnessed a radical change in the community. When he started developing his business, Web 2.0 had not yet been born.

He describes the internet as a one-way communication system where people will visit your websites either in search of information or at the beginning of e-commerce to buy a product online.

There have been significant changes in the way people communicate and sell products to their customers. The whole idea of distributing a product and asking a customer to buy it is over, and now it’s time to start a conversation and create a narrative so that people feel part of the community they belong to.

It was at this point that customers felt that they had the opportunity to feel in demand enough to go and try your product and become part of your community. “So there has been a very big change in how you bring your customers on board, even though the essence of the games has remained the same.”

The element that allows you to score the most points or win a prize during the game remains the same. Ellul goes on to explain that the only thing that has changed is how to engage people and make them feel part of the community. “We take care of this community by keeping it with us.”

The iGaming communities are constantly growing, and we are now witnessing a merger. In the past, we had a traditional gambling community where players played slots, poker, and other various 諻儦渠 games. Wesley says that over the next three to five years, we’ll see mega-growth as video game communities merge with those communities, making the industry even more competitive.

Speaking about changes to the reward system that adapt to games, Ellul states that games are now seen as something that can really bring value back. While we used to play for fun, coins that turned into nothing and a higher ranking in the scoreboard, today games move on to rewarding players with a prize system, where after playing, the achievements you make can be excluded from the game. We look at the convergence between what was the traditional gaming community as we know it, the “gambling community,” and the traditional video game community.

“As in the metaverse, we will see people getting closer and closer over the next few years, where the two worlds may be almost indistinguishable thanks to the merger. With the advent of the metaverse, we will see a much larger gaming community become part of the bigger picture.”

Games that promote the mass adoption of blockchain

There is a community of 60 million players who play quizzes alone every day. Instead of trying to take players to another world, Quizando takes it to them.

These players are already sitting and wasting their time online, and it’s your job to give them something new to experience in their game. If they used to have a token in the game itself, then try to come up with something new that they can take and sell. Giving them a token as a reward means that you get these new players in a different space, opening up this new world for them to explore. This changes the whole formation of the things that Ellul explains.

Wesley explains it more simply: “In the same way that we gave children money as a reward, which they later used to buy toys in the store, this method can be adapted to games and technology. People in games already understand the concept of a toy store, and with the new reward system, we are leading them to where they can spend them. I believe that the games have been and will be a big push forward.”
