An Irish lawmaker has introduced legislation that would ban the use of credit cards for online and retail betting in the country

By prohibiting the use of credit cards, the Betting (Prohibition on the Use of Credit Cards) Act 2021 aims to revise the Betting Act of 1931 in order to promote responsible gambling. Thomas Gould, Sinn F¨¦in’s spokesperson on addiction, rehabilitation and wellbeing, introduced him.

Under the original legislation, individuals seeking a license must agree not to accept bets placed with a credit card, and the new invoice would make this requirement mandatory. The use of e-wallets will also be prohibited unless the payment provider can prove that safeguards are in place to prevent the use of credit cards.

After three months, people with existing licenses will be subject to the new credit card restrictions. Violations can result in a fine of up to two years in prison.

“I’m very proud to launch this legislation that would ban credit cards in online and in-store betting,” Gould said.

“The protection of vulnerable people must be first in the regulation of gambling. While the government has yet to publish a gambling control bill, Sinn F¨¦in is committed to putting forward credible protections that help protect vulnerable people.”

It was announced in August that Irish bookmakers will ban the use of credit cards for gambling, as well as pre-game-changing advertising.

“We need to make sure that those who are suffering from addiction are not gambling with money they don’t have and can’t afford,” Gould added.

“I call on all parties, and independents, to support this legislation and ensure that we see real protection for the most vulnerable in our society.”
