Responsible gaming measures such as voluntary self-exclusion (VSE) and limit-setting can significantly reduce online gaming activity and spending, a joint study by India’s AIIMS and IIT has found. The study, titled Effectiveness of Self-Exclusion and Limit-Setting on Online Gaming Behaviour, analysed data from 8,300 online gamers and revealed that players who use these tools experience a 20-30 percent decrease in daily deposits and gaming time on Real Money Gaming platforms.

Impact of responsible gaming tools

VSE allows users to take a break from online gaming by voluntarily blocking access to a platform for a set period or permanently. The study found that players opting for VSE showed greater self-awareness and control, with significant reductions in both time spent gaming and money deposited. Self-exclusion serves as a reset mechanism, helping individuals regain balance in their gaming habits before returning.

Limit-setting features, which allow users to cap their gaming time and spending, also proved effective in moderating excessive gaming without a complete pause. The study found that gamers who used these tools managed their finances better and showed improved spending habits.

Gaming industry growth and consumer protection

India’s gaming industry is expanding rapidly, with over 500 million online gamers.

Dr. Tapan K Gandhi, professor at IIT Delhi and lead researcher of the study said, “India’s gaming industry is poised for massive expansion. While innovation will drive this growth, the industry must prioritise consumer protection through responsible gaming measures. Understanding behavioral patterns and tailoring interventions accordingly will create a sustainable gaming future where players can engage safely and responsibly. By providing users with the tools to manage their play responsibly, the industry can continue to grow while prioritising player well-being.”

Dr. Yatan Pal Singh Balhara, Professor of Psychiatry at AIIMS, who co-led the study said, “This analysis unearths the importance of implementing and promoting structured interventions like self-exclusion and limit-setting in empowering players with healthier gaming habits. As the online gaming industry continues to expand, combining such tools with player support mechanisms could be key to fostering long-term responsible gaming practices targeted at ensuring the mental well-being of the gamers.”

Future recommendations for responsible gaming

The study recommended expanding responsible gaming initiatives by integrating:

  • Real-time behavioural alerts to notify users about excessive gaming
  • Financial literacy programmes to promote better money management
  • Awareness campaigns to educate players on responsible gaming practices

The researchers also emphasised the need for mental health support services for players experiencing negative effects from excessive gaming. A systematic assessment of responsible gaming tools using robust study designs was suggested to enhance their effectiveness.
