In response to a number of recent player suspensions that resulted in ongoing investigations, the National Football League (NFL) has announced its plans to reinforce its gambling policy for the upcoming 2023 season. The league revealed these intentions during a conference call with reporters and journalists, outlining a set of “key rules” that will be enforced for players.
Jeff Miller, NFL’s Executive Vice President of Communications, acknowledged the evolving landscape and technological advancements that have made sports betting more accessible than ever before. He emphasized the need to adapt to these changes and ensure that the integrity of the game remains intact.
The reinforced rules for players include a strict prohibition on betting on the NFL, gambling at team facilities or while traveling for road games or staying at team hotels, and refraining from having someone else place bets on their behalf. Additionally, players are not allowed to share inside information, enter sportsbooks during the NFL season, or participate in daily fantasy football. The scope of “not betting on the NFL” extends to wagers on the NFL Draft, Pro Bowl, flag football events, and the NFL Honors.
To provide clarity on these rules, new recruits will be required to attend mandatory education sessions. League officials will also visit team facilities to ensure players fully understand prohibited activities.
While players are permitted to participate in full-season fantasy football, the payout must not exceed US $250. However, NFL coaches and staff members are strictly forbidden from betting on any sport, including college, professional, and Olympic events.
To monitor player activity, the NFL will collaborate with sportsbooks and external monitoring firms. The league maintains business partnerships with Caesars, DraftKings, and FanDuel, allowing sportsbooks to operate within its stadiums.
Earlier this year, the NFL suspended four Detroit Lions players and one Washington Commanders player for violations of the league’s gambling rules. Notably, former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, was suspended for the entire 2022 season for betting on NFL games.
It is worth mentioning that Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers recently admitted to being under investigation by the NFL regarding the gambling policy. While the league has yet to announce any findings from the investigation, Rodgers expressed remorse and claimed full responsibility for his actions.
NFL season 2023 sets off on Thursday, 7 September 2023.
