Ministry of Gozo partners with SiGMA to boost digital growth

Matthew Busuttil

During a visit to the SiGMA offices in Malta on 8 July 2025, the Minister for Gozo and Planning, Hon. Clint Camilleri, announced a strategic partnership between the Ministry, InvestGozo, and SiGMA. The collaboration will bring SiGMAs Affiliate Retreat to Gozo, along with a VIP event for C-level officials, in tandem with SiGMA Euro-Med, in which the Ministry of Gozo will participate. The partnership sets the stage for a new era of digital innovation and sustainable economic development in Gozo, positioning the island as a competitive hub for high-value enterprise and international investment in the tech and iGaming sectors.

Together, we are launching a chapter in Gozo economic development, one that places our island on the map as a regional hub for sustainable investment innovation, and high-value enterprise, Camilleri said during his speech at the SiGMA Malta offices.

Gozo, long appreciated for its natural tranquillity and cultural richness, has lagged in digital infrastructure and investment appeal. However, according to Minister Camilleri, this is changing fast.

Bridging the digital divide in Gozo

In a brief interview with SiGMA, Minister Camilleri confirmed, Gozo lacks digital innovation and the accompanying infrastructure. Over the past few months, things have improved, for example, with the installation of fibre optic cables for faster internet speeds around Gozo.?

He also highlighted advancements in physical connectivity, including the fast ferry route from Sliema with a stop in Bu?ibba and the construction of a new airfield, which will better position Gozo to attract tech-based and remote working enterprises.

The SiGMA partnership is expected to further that momentum through two flagship events hosted on the island in August and September 2025, serving as a build-up to SiGMA Euro-Med 2025.

From the 28th to the 30th of August, Gozo will host the SiGMA Affiliate Retreat… welcoming 50 of the most prominent affiliates in the digital and gaming sectors, Camilleri said. This trip offers an unmatched glimpse into Gozo’s leisure, hospitality, and lifestyle potential.

In addition to the Affiliate Retreat, the island will host a VIP Investment Event on September 1, which will feature high-level business engagement and a networking lunch attended by senior government officials and leading private sector stakeholders.

Strategic events with lasting impact

These events are more than symbolic. They are a clear demonstration of power to attract meaningful, sustainable investment to Gozo, not just through digital promotion but through real-world engagement, Camilleri emphasised.

From a socio-economic standpoint, the project aligns with the Malta Vision 2050 strategy and aims to generate tangible results in employment and enterprise.

When asked how the collaboration would affect jobs, Camilleri was optimistic: Unemployment is already at a very low rate, and this will increase digital job opportunities.

While Gozo is not traditionally considered a business destination, Minister Camilleri believes that its peaceful atmosphere, coupled with improved infrastructure, could make it an attractive proposition for international investors.

Thanks to the collaboration between SiGMA and the Gozo Ministry, SiGMAs success will also extend to Gozo, offering investors a more peaceful environment in which to invest and start businesses, he noted.

New chapter in Gozos investment story

This marks the first time Gozo plays such a prominent role within the broader SiGMA framework. With over 1,000 delegates, sponsors, and exhibitors expected to descend on the island from 1 to 3 September, Gozos inclusion is set to significantly raise its profile within the Mediterraneans tech and gaming investment scene.

Gozo is open for investment and ready for the future, declared Camilleri, reinforcing the message that the island is no longer just a picturesque destination but an active player in Maltas long-term digital and economic strategy.

The partnership between SiGMA and the Ministry for Gozo is more than just an entry on a calendar. It is a strategic manoeuvre to embed Gozo in global innovation networks, while safeguarding its cultural identity and lifestyle appeal. The government remains committed to delivering both the technical infrastructure and business incentives required to make this vision a reality.
