Cambodia records 85% increase in gaming tax revenue in 2024?
Cambodia witnessed a sharp rise in its tax revenue from 바카라s and game-of-chance operators in 2024, reaching $63.1 million. This marks an 85 percent increase compared to the previous year, reflecting the growing contribution of the gambling sector to the country’s economy. Licensing landscape for 바카라s and games of chance
The CGMC reported that 195 바카라s in Cambodia held operating licences in 2024. However, 15 licences expired during the year, one was revoked, and another was suspended. The country also licensed 21 operators for games of chance, with one licence being cancelled and three others suspended. These figures highlight a dynamic regulatory environment aimed at ensuring oversight of the gambling industry.
Last year, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced a prohibition on the establishment of new 바카라s in the provinces of Kep and Kampot, except for ongoing operations at Bokor Mountain. The decision aligns with a broader initiative to encourage investment in diverse sectors such as hospitality, tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, trade, and special economic zones (SEZs). The Prime Minister highlighted that the ban is intended to preserve cultural and religious heritage, enhance security, and maintain order in key tourist areas. This policy underscores the governments commitment to fostering tourism and hospitality investments that align with the nations cultural values and societal priorities.
Casinos targeting foreign tourists
Cambodias 바카라 industry is geared towards attracting foreign visitors, as the law restricts gambling within these establishments to non-Cambodians. Most 바카라s are strategically located along border areas and in the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk, known for the popular Sihanoukville region. This geographical positioning caters to tourists and cross-border patrons.
Phnom Penh, the nations capital, hosts only one 바카라, NagaWorld, operated by NagaCorp. The limited presence of 바카라s in the capital contrasts with their concentration in tourist-friendly areas, showcasing the government’s targeted approach to the industry.
Growth amidst oversight
As the country records growth in gaming revenue, the sector has also contributed to a rise in fraudulent activities and human trafficking, with Cambodia becoming a focal point for organised crime in the region. The influx of Chinese investment has sparked economic instability, widened wealth gaps and fuelled land grabbing. ?
