Botswana Gambling Authority and Namibia Lotteries Board cement partnership through MoU

The Botswana Gambling Authority and Namibia Lotteries Board have moved towards greater regional cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). During a high-level bilateral visit in Gaborone, both countries reached the decision, marking a new era for gaming regulation. They aim to establish a collaboration that sets a new benchmark in the regulation of gaming activities, with shared objectives of ensuring integrity, protecting players, and promoting responsible gaming.

Focus on collaborative regulatory policies

The MoU highlights the determination of both regulators to collaborate on strengthening regulatory frameworks. The MoU encourages the sharing of information and expertise, as well as collaborative research efforts to gain a deeper understanding of the social effects of gaming. The two organisations acknowledge the value of joint working to protect gamers and ensure high standards in the sector. The agreement represents a concerted effort to make the environment safer for gaming fans across the region.

Future efforts to enhance gaming regulation

There are a number of initiatives contemplated under this alliance to enhance gaming regulation’s effectiveness and transparency. Of particular significance, there are to be collaborative training programs for regulatory personnel to gain the expertise necessary to implement best practices in gaming regulation. These programs will enable both authorities to stay abreast of regulatory excellence.

In addition, the government will initiate public awareness campaigns to enlighten players on responsible gaming. The campaigns will also notify players of available resources and assistance for those looking for help, reaffirming the mutual objective of responsible gaming.

Dr. Wycliff Shililifa, Chairperson of the Lotteries Board, headed the Namibian delegation, accompanied by CEO Dr. John Shimaneni.

This collaboration is a milestone in cross-border regulatory harmonisation, solidifying Botswana’s role as a frontrunner in responsible gaming policy on the continent. Formalising the partnership aims to address common issues, such as problem gambling and unlicensed gaming activities, in both jurisdictions.
