The new mayor, Takeharu Yamanaka, describes 氚旍勾霛約 as “poisoned apples.”

After the election of Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka, the city of Yokohama suspended the application process for integrated resorts (IRs) nationwide. Yamanaka was one of many candidates who opposed IR, claiming to abolish IR procedures as soon as he became mayor.

Joji Yamanaka, a former professor at Yokohama City University who won last month’s election on an anti-IR pledge, said on Friday that the city would not participate in the IR bidding process, even though it has been known for quite some time.

As of October 1, the city of Yokohama (pictured) has also announced that it will close its dedicated office to support the 氚旍勾霛 project.

Sega Sammy Holdings Inc., a major entertainment company, has announced that it is withdrawing plans to build a 氚旍勾霛 resort in Yokohama. “We have been forced to discontinue our participation in the IR project in Yokohama, and the impact of this matter on our consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022 will be minimal.”

As part of the alliance, which includes Genting Singapore Ltd., Japan company previously said it plans to invest “approximately” 120 billion yen (US$1.09 billion) to build a 氚旍勾霛 resort in Yokohama.

Genting Singapore has also officially announced that it will halt plans to build a 氚旍勾霛 facility in Yokohama. The company was previously recognized as one of two eligible bidders in the city’s IR request for proposals process.

The Board of Directors of Genting Singapore said: “We are surprised and disappointed by the unexpected turn of events that led to the City of Yokohama’s decision to cancel the Yokohama IR Bid. The company’s board of directors and management, along with our consortium partners and supporting partners, have spent a significant amount of time and done their best to prepare and submit a compelling bid, proposing significant investments that will benefit the city of Yokohama and its local communities, while striving to make Yokohama a global tourist destination.” said.

Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd, which operates sites in Macau and the Philippines, was named as another candidate for the contest in addition to Genting Singapore.

Former Mayor Fumiko Hayashi announced plans to apply for an IR for Yokohama City in August 2019, but the issue was at odds and became the focus of last month’s election, with Yamanaka vehemently opposed such a facility.

Yoshimura said earlier that he does not believe Yamanaka has any chance of winning the Yokohama mayoral election. This is due to his opposition to 氚旍勾霛約, as well as his handling of the epidemic and ongoing concerns of the former mayor.

The 48-year-old man, who has formal support from the Constitutional Democratic Party and the Japan Communist Party, described the 氚旍勾霛 as a “poisoned apple” and pledged to cancel Yokohama’s IR campaign.

In the preliminary 33.59% of the votes, Hachiro Konogi had 21.62% and incumbent mayor Fumiko Hayashi had 13.06%, while Yamanaka had 33.59% and 13.06% respectively.

According to a study by Maybank Research, the integrated resort in Yokohama generates approximately US$7 billion in gaming-related revenue annually, which accounts for 60% of the total GGR in Japan’s IR industry, with local residents accounting for more than 80%.
