SiGMA’s Kamil sat down with Wesley Ellul, one of Malta’s gaming tech leaders and a prominent figure at SiGMA’s events, to discuss the new era of gaming and technology.
Wesley Ellul is a serial entrepreneur who has worked in a variety of industries. He was one of the first digital entrepreneurs to work in the tech industry in Malta. Since 2005, Ellul has founded a number of companies, including businesses such as Untangled Media, Keepmeposted, and TicketLine. Currently, there are 13 businesses running.
His latest business is . Quizando is a brand that allows you to take classic quizzes anytime, anywhere. Although he is in the gaming industry, he focuses on the field of skill games and later became heavily involved in the blockchain industry.
“I’m a man who sees opportunities and thinks about how to develop them and create a better industry for everyone.”
Speaking about his venture Quizando, Wesley says the idea behind it is knowledge-based. He said that he was happy that Quizando was a skill game. “The fact that players are playing believing they can win has diminished their presence as a gambling site,” Ellul explains.
Quizando has a game with different levels that you can play against each other at different levels. When the first version was released at the end of 2016, at the beginning of 2017, between three months and six months, it was doing so well that the server crashed and everyone involved in the project realized that they were doing something good, he continued.
“Quizando is now a social gaming platform that offers skill-based games and allows communities to interact with each other.”
The game has evolved in many ways, and it’s no longer just a game where you play against a diverse group of people, but as part of a community, you can play against the community and see who’s the best at what they do.”
Quizando has evolved dramatically. The first major evolution came between 2018 and 2019, when the team was building that scaled-up platform. It’s a platform that can hold about 100,000 players playing the same game at the same time. Apart from this, the brand started looking for people who had a certain kind of audience to expand further.
YouTubers, celebrities, and charities have released reverse versions of Quizando’s Twitch. Instead of everyone seeing someone playing a game and chatting about it, the exact opposite began to be done.
creators host the games, and players actively play the games instead of passively watching and commenting on them.
This has significantly changed the dynamics of the community, bringing players closer to each other and attracting more players in the long run.
When asked if people had easily adapted to this new play model, Ellul replied that everyone who tried it had loved it so far, so they have been working with a variety of different communities on this. Quizando’s largest community was in India.
Working with the World Wildlife Fund and thousands of schools across India, their biggest game was 50,000 players. Across India, 50,000 children played 2 million games in the first seven days of the event.
“People quickly adapt to it, they get into the whole concept. Because the idea is that when you’re playing, you can see that you can do something, and it pushes you to do a little bit better every time. We’re combining this with education, and we’re making it easier for people to adapt, even if it’s just a social gathering.” The numbers and achievements, he argues, have been quite satisfactory so far.
Interviewees who have been in the tech industry since the early 2000s have seen dramatic changes in the community. When he started building, Web 2.0 hadn’t even started yet.
According to him, the web is a one-way communication system, where people visit your website to look for information or buy products online after e-commerce has begun.
There has been a significant change in the way we communicate with customers and market our products. Now that the idea of distributing your product and getting customers to buy it is completely over, it’s time to start a conversation and create a narrative that makes you feel like you’re part of the community you belong to.
At this point, the customer felt like they had the opportunity to feel welcome enough to go try out your product and engage in being part of your community. “The core of the game hasn’t changed, but the way we engage customers has changed tremendously.”
The only thing that has changed is the way you engage people and make them feel part of the community, as Ellul makes even clearer, the elements that go into getting the highest score or winning a prize during a game. “The way we take care of this community is to keep them on hand.”
As the iGaming community continues to grow, what we’re seeing is mergers. In the past, there was a traditional gambling community where players played slots, poker, and a variety of other 諻儦渠 games. Wesley said that over the next 3~5 years, the video game community is looking to witness huge growth that will combine with these communities to make the industry even more competitive.
Commenting on the changes in the reward system that games are adapting to, Ellul said that games are now seen as something that can return value. In the past, it was played for fun, but now there is a prize system in the game, and you can take out what you have achieved after playing from the game. We are witnessing a convergence between the traditional gaming community as we know it, the “gambling community” and the traditional video game community.
“Like the metaverse, the two worlds are almost indistinguishable, and we’re going to see people getting closer and closer in the coming years.
There is a community of 60 million players who play quiz games alone every day. What Quizando is not trying to take the player to another world, but to bring it to the player.
These players are already spending time sitting online, and your job is to give them something new to experience in-game. On the other hand, before the advent of tokens in the game itself, they try to come up with something new that they can take out and sell. Rewarding them with tokens means taking new players to another space and letting them explore new worlds. This will change the whole of education, Ellul explains.
Wesley said, “We can apply this technique to games and tech, just as we rewarded our kids with money to buy them toys in the store later. I believe that gaming has been, and will continue to be, a great step forward.”
