Starting by sharing the backstory of Boom.AI’s history, Nate Clegg talked about the company’s founding in Utah and its mission to make customer service more human.
Boom.AI, in particular, is a communication platform that can use artificial intelligence to talk to people, and in order to make marketing more personal, it needs to be smarter, and AI or artificial intelligence is the very definition of smart. As AI learns, grows, and communicates better with people, it will be better than many of the things that exist in marketing today.
He also said that this evolution will remove some of the tedious aspects of customer service for both businesses, both by being able to scale up and take IVRs out, and for customers who will be able to enjoy a more personal and efficient (ironically) human experience. He went into more detail about the company’s origins, explaining that the company was actually ahead of AI, even though the company’s original business plan was still on the path of automation.
We started 15 years agonot artificial intelligencebecause it didn’t exist 15 years ago. We started out as a call center, focusing on creating technology that could play pre-recorded statements and communicate with people from other countries without accents. This is common in the U.S., for example, because Filipinos understand English well, understand American culture, and yet their accent is well understood.
Our technology made a statement that we pre-recorded so that they could play and it sounded like they were talking to someone in the United States. This interaction allowed people from the Philippines and other parts of the world to take the time to communicate with other communities and native accents, filling a void in the market.
This ultimately led to the discovery of artificial intelligence, which proved to be a key pillar for the next stage of their service evolution.
And with the digital marketing space becoming increasingly competitive, Charity asked what sets Boom.AI apart from its competitors.
Communication with our person sounds very natural. When you’re talking to an AI voicebot, most of the time it sounds like an AI voicebot, and you know it’s a machine, but it’s actually a negative consumer experience. For the last 15 years, we have been preparing to develop soundboard technology to play voice messages by pressing a button on the keyboard. We’ve gotten so good at it and so smooth that it sounds like a natural conversation with people. That’s what differentiates us.
Later, charities began to ask if Boom.AI had any plans to expand into Europe.
I’d love to do that. Some of our employees have spent a lot of time in Europe or have lived in Europe. We would love to come back. I lived in Italy for 5 years. I love being in Europe every second, and the owner and CEO lived in Italy for a few years, if you come here, you come here anytime, even if it’s an exhibition like Sigma.
Moving on to the final question, Charity asked Nate if there was any merit in the belief that AI would take over the workforce, and if he was facing a crisis of seeing the beginning of an artificially dominated workforce.
I think people are worried that AI is more advanced than it actually is. I always joke: if you know our programmers, you won’t have to worry so much. You shouldn’t say that. It’s a very nice product, but we’re not yet ready for a complete replacement. But it will replace some of the work we don’t want to do.
Using customer service workers as an example, Nate argued that this form of AI eliminates the need for repetitive, fatigue-inducing, and repetitive tasks. This necessarily improves the quality of life of workers while maintaining if not increasing productivity.
AI is going to replace some jobs, but from now on, more and more people are branching out into creative stuff, and if you look at Sigma, I’m sure they’ll have videos of the crazy things that’s going on here, but AI can’t make humans.
