By banning the use of credit cards, the Prohibition on Use of Credit Cards Act of 2021 is a revision of the Betting Act of 1931 that seeks to promote responsible gambling. It was Thomas Gould, Sinn F¨¦in’s spokesman for drug addiction and well-being, who introduced it.
According to the original legislation, individuals applying for a license cannot accept bets placed using a credit card; The new bill would make this requirement mandatory. It will also be prohibited to use e-wallets unless the payment provider can prove that there are safeguards in place to prevent the use of credit cards.
Licensees will have three months to adjust to the new restrictions. Violations can result in a fine and up to two years in prison.
“I’m very proud of this legislation that would see credit cards banned in online betting, as well as in offices,” Gould said.
“The protection of vulnerable people must be at the forefront of gambling regulation. Although the government has yet to publish a draft law to this effect, Sinn F¨¦in is committed to coming up with credible ideas that will help protect the vulnerable.”
It was announced in August that Irish bookmakers would ban the use of credit cards for gambling and ë°”ì¹´ë¼ advertising.
“We need to make sure that those who are potentially addicted don’t bet with money they don’t have. They can’t afford it,” Gould added.
“I call on all parties, and the self-employed, to support this legislation: real protection for the most vulnerable in our society must be created.”
