An Irish lawmaker has proposed legislation that would ban the use of credit cards for online and retail betting in the country

By banning the use of credit cards, the Prohibition on Use of Credit Cards Act of 2021 is a revision of the Betting Act of 1931 that seeks to promote responsible gambling. It was Thomas Gould, Sinn F��in’s spokesman for drug addiction and well-being, who introduced it.

According to the original legislation, individuals applying for a license cannot accept bets placed using a credit card; The new bill would make this requirement mandatory. Licensees will have three months to adjust to the new restrictions. Violations can result in a fine and up to two years in prison.

“I’m very proud of this legislation that would see credit cards banned in online betting, as well as in offices,” Gould said.

“The protection of vulnerable people must be at the forefront of gambling regulation. Although the government has yet to publish a draft law to this effect, Sinn F��in is committed to coming up with credible ideas that will help protect the vulnerable.”
