The announcement comes after Bill C-218, also known as the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, was passed last month. The bill aimed to repeal paragraph 207(4)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada, which only allowed consumers to bet on at least three or more matches with a single sports bet. The amended legislation will allow each province to place and manage bets on a single event. They will have the power to decide how to tax and regulate them.
According to Canadian Gaming Association President and CEO Paul Burns, sports betting in Canada “is going in the right direction.”
“We don’t really know why the federal government has waited so long … There’s been a little bit of controversy,” Burns said. “Now, there are more people willing to go to the actual date live. No one will have to wait long to get access to the products. It’s great to see it work.”
Unsurprisingly, the British Colombia Lottery Organization (BCLC) has already made the leap, offering single-event sports betting through its 바카ë¼Now.com platform. The company signed an agreement with data provider Genius Sports in August, intending to use Genius’ LiveData and LiveTrading services for data and pricing.
Lynda Cavanaugh, Interim President and CEO of BCLC, commented on the release:
“We are delighted to enhance our offering on 바카ë¼Now.com, the only gambling website operating in British Columbia where revenue goes back to residents, supporting provincial initiatives such as healthcare, education and community programs.”
In Ontario, the Lottery and Gaming Organization of Ontario is expected to launch the new digital sports betting platform, PROLINE+, soon. The platform is already accepting the first registrations and will give customers access to bets on mobile devices, tablets and desktops.
“We are thrilled to launch our new digital sports bet, PROLINE+, on this important date when OLG can finally offer sports betting on specific events and be among the first in Canada to offer this capability,” Duncan Hannay, president and CEO of OLG, said in a press release. “More events, more betting options and greater accessibility mean greater fan engagement with the comfort of knowing that OLG stands behind the product.”
Similarly, in Quebec, Loto-Quebec has restructured the Mise-o-jeu online sports betting program to allow for individual sports betting. Alberta residents, on the other hand, will have to wait longer to access single-event betting, as ë°”ì¹´ë¼ Alberta is expected to go live in the fall, according to Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis. The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority is also still working on its plan and some sources suggest that it is attempting to create a province-wide sports betting app. Manitoba seems to be exploring options to see where single-event sports betting could be offered. The CEO of the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, Chris Keevil, stated that its online gambling page ALC.CA needs several changes to be able to offer individual sports betting.
The path to launching single-event sports betting in Canada began more than a decade ago. Now that the laws have finally been changed, the country can start reaping a projected $425 million increase in GDP, according to PwC. The company also predicts that Canada’s gambling market will grow 10 times in size in the first two years of legalization and could generate up to C$2.4 billion (US$1.89 billion) annually.
