Scammers were looking for victims through fake profiles and instant messaging services

From SiGMA, we recommend caution after a series of chatbot scams in which cybercriminals had extortion plans for economic purposes posing as employees of the SiGMA Group.

The chatbot scam is a twist on phishing scams and involves manipulating a trusted brand or person through a fake chat group run by an automated bot or by people working together to trick the intended victim. Most of the time, money is irrecoverable, especially if the payment is made in cryptocurrencies, something that is becoming more and more frequent as digital currencies take over.

This boom has also coincided perfectly with the increased use of instant messaging services, which has helped boost adoption, but has also paved the way for increased criminal activity.

Telegram, for example, currently has 500 million monthly active users, with a projection of more than one billion consumers by 2022 and has become a popular resource for crypto enthusiasts as well as crypto fortune seekers targeting the entire world. from companies to inexperienced investors, especially through pump-and-dump scams and fake trading bots.

These types of increasingly sophisticated scams are often based on the fact that the stolen identities are often legitimate and trusted public figures or brands, ensuring fraudsters have a quick path to the appearance of authenticity and legitimacy.

While difficult to succeed, chatbot and website scams include several telltale signs that all is not as it seems. Beware of URLs that try to mimic the original websites: it’s very easy to miss misspelled words and added characters, low-resolution logos or grammatical errors, and unclear language are also key indicators that it may be a replica. Any request for money transfer, whether as payment or as aid, should be checked in person or over the phone with the recipient.
